Romans Chapter One                                 Lesson 6

Review:

4. Paul presents Jesus as the God - man; vs:3/4

- that Jesus was fully God and fully man; term for this is hypostatic union.

- the hypostatic union makes three points about Jesus;

1. Jesus was:  perfect humanity.

2. Jesus was;  absolute deity.

3. Jesus was; one person not 2.

5. True doctrine is always theopocentric not anthropocentric!

- Paul speaks of his commission having the purpose of bringing about the obedience consisting of faith; obedience that believes the gospel "for His name's sake,"

In this next section, v.8-15 we have Paul's introduction to the book his thanksgiving and concerns related to them.

> Overview of v.8-15, the structure;

- These verses give us a view, a window, if you will, into Paul's mind, his thinking, even his emotions as he opens this great epistle.

1. I thank - v.8        gratefulness for them

2. I serve - v.9-10     service to the Lord and how it relates to them

3. I long  - v. 11-12   his personal desires for them

4. I have planned - v.13  his planning to come to them

5. I am under obligation - v.14  his debt toward them; cause,  grace

6. I am eager - v.15   he was eager, was ready now to minister to them

> 1:8 We see Paul's Gratefulness;

- What Paul is doing with the use of Prw/ton is to highlight what is of first importance to him as he begins expressing in this section what is his burning motivation to minister to those in Rome.

  Why is his thankful attitude expressed in prayer be so important??

"I thank my God through Jesus Christ for you all."

- Notice that this states one of the most basic principles of prayer;  We approach God through Christ.

- It is through Him that we have access to the Father  Eph 2:18; 3:12.

   * The reason for his thankfulness; "because your faith is being proclaimed throughout the whole world."

- Why do you suppose that Paul's priority in thankfulness is for their faith?

- In Romans we will find that the object of faith is always one of 2 things;

#1. the person of Christ or #2 the word or promises about Christ!

- These believers were living lives that stood out in a city in which Roman historian Tacitus said  "flowed all things that are vile and abominable, and where they are encouraged."

<1:9-10> Paul's personal service  "I serve";

> The first phrase in the Gk text; is  For God is my witness;  then follows, whom I serve in my spirit in the [preaching] of the gospel of His Son,

- There is a similar pattern in 2 other passages; 2 Cor 11:11; Phil 1:8;

- In all these passages, what Paul is expressing to them, is his thinking, his vpt; his concern for them;

When you study through Paul's epistles you find that one of his idiosyncrasies is that he tells people the truth, more often than not is exactly what they don't want to hear!

- With this statement  "For God is my witness,"  Paul is saying, it may be difficult for you to understand my concern for you, but it is genuine, its real;  God knows my thoughts, my motives and my desires for you!

> The word for serve = latreu,w; A&G to serve, in our lit. only of the carrying out of religious duties; In the LXX it is used of the service of the priests in the temple;

- In Phil 3:3 it is translated "worship"

- We serve the Lord as priests; therefore every act of service is an act of worship.

- For the believer there is no secular, all is sacred/spiritual.

Rem: Everything you do is to be done with the attitude or motivation as unto the Lord!   [Col 3:17, 23]
